Locavores - It's more than just lunch

This October Local 98856 will continue the Locavores Education Program, working with students of the Methow Valley Community School.  The Locavores Program offers these young learners ages 6 through 12 an opportunity to explore a wide variety of locally grown food, learn about and meet the people growing it, and take part in transforming it into delicious meals.

In addition to Tuesday noon lunches served at the Community School, several students will join the staff of Local 98856 each Friday for a hands-on lesson using Local's greenhouse, backyard garden and kitchen as a classroom.  Here students learn that food comes from the earth and is more than a box on the grocery store shelf.  They plant, pick, chop, measure, mix and cook, creating flavorful and nutritious lunches that are then shared with family and community.  This program also exposes young thinkers to the concepts of organic and sustainable farming practices as a means to keeping ourselves and our planet healthy.  After all, these young people will one day inherit our world.  At Local 98856 we believe the Locavores Program is providing our young people with a life-long foundation of skills to insure that they are prepared to act as stewards for both themselves and the planet.

Check us out!  It's more than just lunch!
